Daniel Sturridge urged to leave Liverpool by John Arne Riise

Liverpool legend John Arne Riise feels his former club should sell Daniel Sturridge in the sumer in order to allow him regular playing time next season.

The injury-plagued striker made just 27 appearances for the Reds during the previous campaign – with a significant amount off the substitutes’ bench. Fans are probably divided on whether Sturridge should remain at Anfield for another year, but Riise believes that the England international should move on to earn regular first-team football. When asked by a Reds fan on Twitter, Riise responded: “Think it’s best for him to go where he can play regularly.”

Sturridge has been on the fringes of the Reds squad since the arrival of Klopp in 2015, and his persistent injury niggles have done him no good in his bid to maintain his position. The Reds favourite had played second fiddle to the likes of Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane for most of the previous season, and it was not until Mane got injured, did he earn a regular run in the starting lineup.

Although Sturridge is regarded as one of England’s finest talents, he struggles to adapt to Klopp’s high intensity playing style and this has seemingly reduced his overall playing time. His 2013/14 exploits look a distant dream in his current situation, and he could be on the move this summer with Newcastle United deemed to be interested in his striker. Sturridge is no longer the first name on the England score sheet, and he finds himself in a situation where he could miss the World Cup squad altogether, should he stick with the Reds for another season.

Sturridge has bagged an impressive tally of 61 goals in 119 outings for Liverpool with 24 of those coming in a single campaign in 2013/14 where the Reds came a close second to eventual winners Manchester City.

KLOPP: WE ARE NOT SELLING COUTINHO

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has denied any plan whatsoever to let go of their playmaker and skipper Philippe Coutinho this summer.

Coutinho continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona. The Nou Camp dwellers are keen on luring the talented Brazilian to Spain despite him signing a new five year deal in January.

KLOPP: WE ARE NOT SELLING COUTINHO

Coutinho continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona. The Nou Camp dwellers are keen on luring the talented Brazilian to Spain despite him signing a new five year deal in January.

Coutinho has been crucial to Liverpool’s success in recent seasons. The niggling injuries this season limited his contribution to the team but he nonetheless inspired the team on many occasions. Liverpool were hit by poor form, absence and a spate of injuries to key players like Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge, Sadio Mane, Jordan Henderson and the rest. However, Klopp is expected to keep his best players whilst reinforcing so they can challenge for trophies next year.

Coutinho’s January deal made him the highest paid player at Anfield. He reportedly gets £150,000 basic salary a week. Since Liverpool did not add an unbeatable buyout clause – a thing that is pretty standard these days for a top player at a top club –, Barca might believe they can force a deal. The Reds did not even include a release clause at all.

Klopp joked that the La Liga champs would have to pay many times over the current world record transfer fee to get Coutinho.

“When did he sign a new contract? So that would be a nice idea. With a £400 million clause! There are absolutely no plans. What our owners say is there is the absolute opportunity not to sell anybody if we do not want to,” Klopp said.

There were rumours that the Merseyside club would sell Lucas Leiva and possibly Sturridge this summer. But Klopp said the team was stable and added that the plan was to bring in more before the next season.
