Daniel Sturridge gives update on his fitness following Liverpool comeback

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has provided a positive update on his fitness after he scored his first goal of the season in the 4-0 demolition of Arsenal.

The England international has insisted that he feels as sharp as ever and is looking forward to making a key contribution over the course of the campaign.

Sturridge had to deal with series of nagging injuries during the 2016/17 season and this led to suggestions that the club could cash in on his services in the summer. However, Jurgen Klopp has kept his faith in the versatile forward, who managed to open his goalscoring account for the season last weekend.

Speaking on the club's official website, Sturridge is looking towards a strong season for the club and country after he recently earned a callup in Gareth Southgate's squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovakia, he said: "I feel as sharp as ever, I'm ready to go. I had a great pre-season, felt really good and I'm looking forward to the future to be honest with you. I feel great, it's the best I've felt for a long time, and I'm looking forward to this season. It's the nature of football - sometimes you feel great, sometimes you don't feel great."

The Reds notched eight goals in the games versus Hoffenheim and Arsenal prior to the international break, but Sturridge insists that the club should not get carried away with the Champions League likely to carry more burden on their shoulders, he added: "For me, I always go from the humble aspect, which is don't get too excited so early in the season."

Liverpool are currently on seven points after three games into the new season, and their next encounter against Manchester City could give a fair example of title prospects this term. Klopp's side were unbeaten against top-six opposition in the season just past, and they have so far preserved this record with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Arsenal.
